Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to load when the input power source – usually the main power, fails. The primary role of any UPS is to provide short-term power when the input power source fails. Typically, a UPS is used to protect hardware such as computers, telecommunication equipment, data centres or any other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause serious business disruption, data loss, injuries or fatalities.

Common power problems include:

  1. Voltage spike
  2. Sustained reduction in input voltage
  3. Instability of the mains frequency
  4. Sustained overvoltage

The world’s largest UPS, the 46-megawatt Battery Electric Storage System (BESS) is in Fairbanks, Alaska, and it powers the entire city and nearby rural communities during outages.

There are three common types of UPSs: Online double-conversion, line-interactive, and offline/standby. With an online double-conversion UPS, the batteries are always connected to the inverter, so that no power transfers are necessary. Offline/Standby UPS offers the most basic features providing surge protection and battery backup which is more suitable for your home or small businesses. The line-interactive UPS is similar in operation to a standby UPS, but has the addition of a variable-voltage auto-transformer.

And here are some interesting facts about UPS:

1. Nobody can claim they invented the UPS. It was a combination of theories and studies.

2. John J. Hanley patented the first UPS – filing on November 2nd 1932 and was finally granted on April 3rd 1934. His patent was named “An apparatus For Maintaining An Unfailing and Uninterrupted Supply of Electrical Energy.

3. UPSs can be as small as a book or as large as a room. The difference in size depends on how much battery backup time is required, and on the amount of equipment that is being protected.

4. The UPS backup power supply does not make any noise, unlike a generator.

5. A UPS is a lifeboat for safe shut downs and quick data saving as it is best used to escape unexpected power crises.

6. The first UPSs were of rotary design which utilised a flywheel to provide short intervals of backup power.
